Coffee Before Your Workout

Coffee Before your Workout

It is estimated that half of Americans start their day off with a nicely brewed cup of coffee. Not only does coffee help wake up your mind, but it has a ton of other health benefits such as helping to prevent type 2 diabetes and the onset of some cognitive disorders. But, are there other reasons why drinking coffee is so good for you?

It has been common knowledge for years in the fitness industry that drinking coffee before your workout is very beneficial. Well, now we know why drinking coffee before your workout is so helpful. It turns out that besides getting you mentally prepared, drinking coffee before your workout has several other benefits, including to help you recover faster afterwards.

Improves Your Metabolism

Most people workout to either gain muscle or burn body fat. Because of modern day eating habits, most people workout to lose weight. It turns out that coffee can help. When your metabolism is increased, your body requires more energy. It either gets this energy from stored fat or food. The goal is to get this energy from stored fat. Coffee not only gives your brain a burst, but it does the same for your metabolism.

A Spanish study that was published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that trained athletes that consumed around the same amount of caffeine in a 12oz cup of coffee burned roughly 15 percent more calories for up to three hours after they trained when compared to a placebo group. Having trouble getting lean for the beach? Try drinking coffee before your workout to help speed up your fat loss goals.

Improves Circulation

Most people don’t realize how much their circulation effects their workouts. Your blood is responsible for carrying important nutrients to your muscles, as well as removing cell damaging waste products. When your circulation is poor, it takes longer for your muscles to receive the necessary oxygen and glucose to power your muscles through your workout. Also, your recovery time is decreased because it takes longer to remove cellular waste products from your muscles. Drinking a cup of coffee before your workout may be the answer.

In a recent study, Japanese researchers discovered that people who drank five ounces of coffee experienced a 30 percent increase in capillary blood flow. When your blood circulation is increased, you tend to have improved oxygenation of your tissues, as well as increased removal of waste products. The result is an increase in athletic performance.

Improves Cognitive Function

How many times have you begun your workout when you realize that you completely forgot what you were supposed to do that day. Or, what if you just don’t feel motivated to work out? How can you make improvements to your body if you aren’t motivated to do so? No worries, because coffee is here to help!

When you drink a cup of coffee, the caffeine stimulates your CNS (Central Nervous System) and helps your brain to get prepared for what is about to come. But its not only the CNS boosting effects that make drinking coffee before your workout so helpful. Drinking coffee also helps to improve your memory. Research conducted at Johns Hopkins University backs up these claims. Researchers found that 200 milligrams of caffeine enhanced memory for up to 24 hours. I guess you don’t have to worry about forgetting what to do for your workout if you drink a cup of coffee before you exercise.

Helps Preserve Muscle

As we age, our muscles begin to atrophy (shrink). This atrophy is attributed to neuro-motor degradation. The neuromotor helps to “fire up” your muscles. Without it, your muscles are like an engine without an ignition. As we age, it becomes harder and harder to ignite your muscle fibers. And when your muscles aren’t used, they get smaller. If you don’t want to lose your hard-earned muscle, then drinking coffee might be the answer.

Drinking coffee triggers your brain to release a growth factor referred to as Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF). Not only does BDNF express itself in the brain, but it is also found in the neuromotor. This may help to explain why numerous studies have shown that drinking coffee helps to offset age-related muscle loss and strength. Also, when you lose muscle mass, your metabolism will also slow down. Your body has less muscle and thus requires less fuel. To keep your muscle mass longer, start drinking coffee before your workouts.

Helps Reduce Pain

Pain is one of the greatest limiting factors in the human body. If you are in pain, your body is going to let you know. It is almost impossible to perform at your best if you are hurting. And working out is no different. If you experience too much pain while you are exercising, there is no way that you will have an effective workout. If you don’t like pain, then drink some coffee.

A study from the University of Illinois discovered that caffeine consumption equivalent to two to three cups of coffee taken an hour before a half-hour-long workout significantly reduced the participants’ perceived level of muscle pain. Drink some coffee before your exercise to power through your workouts pain-free.

Drinking coffee has numerous benefits from helping to improve cognitive function to ensuring that you can power through your day. But if you want to make sure that you have great workouts that help you look and feel better, then start drinking coffee before you exercise. I guarantee that you will be grateful that you did.
